Obituary

Mrs. Maudalene Sullivan Young Reed, 88, passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, July 24, 2023. Born in Richmond, VA July 5, 1935, she was the oldest daughter of the late James Leland and Maudalene Sullivan Young.

She is survived by three sons Alan (Tracy), Jimmy (Cindy), Charles “Steve” (Teresa), one daughter Lou Ann, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother James (Margaret), and two sisters. Sophie (Ken), Dell (Tim). Maudie was predeceased by her: husband Archie C. Reed, Jr. her parents, and one sister Leanna Parker.

Maudie met and fell in love with Archie while they were students at Presbyterian College, and they married in August 1957. Maudie dedicated herself to being his wife and supporting him as he answered his call to ministry. After she graduated from Presbyterian College, Maudie worked as a Middle School teacher until Alan was born, then worked as a mother and homemaker until 1976 when she returned to work at Gordon Elementary School as a kindergarten aide.  When that position was phased out, she became a teacher at the Fairfield Child Development Center in the old Fairfield High School. After retiring, she volunteered at Baptist Cancer Center and worked as the receptionist at Archie’s pastoral counseling office. Maudie was an active member of Sion Presbyterian Church. She was a dedicated member of the Sion choir, Presbyterian Women Sunday school teacher, and Deacon. She was also a member of the Winnsboro Music Club and the Winnsboro Lions Club.

Maudie lived a selfless life, always putting the needs and wishes of her family before her own. She was a wonderful mother to her four children, doing her best to make sure each one knew they were loved and held a special place in her heart. She instilled in each of them a love for reading, music, and supported their varied extracurricular activities. She loved being a grandmother and especially liked being dubbed “Greatmama” by her great-grandchildren. Maudie had a marvelous sense of humor and a playful, almost child-like spirit.

The family would like to express a special word of thanks to the ladies who helped to care for Maudie in her last days – Rosalind Foster, Cynthia Bell, Linda S. Hinson, Denita Jackson, Amanda Mitchell, Cynthia Watson, and Josephine Cason.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sion Presbyterian Church 116 W. Washington St, Winnsboro SC 29180.
