Marian Murphy Faile, age 101, passed away peacefully on December 2, 2023, in Irmo, SC. She was born on October 19, 1922, in Pittston, PA, the daughter of the late Joseph and Hilda McAndrew Murphy. Marian was the oldest of eight children.
Marian was known for her sense of humor, her spelling acuity, and her remarkable knowledge. Even at the age of 101, she knew the capital of every state and could recite the alphabet backwards. During World War II, Marian moved from Pittston to Elkton, MD, to work in a defense manufacturing plant. It was there that she met her husband Robert, as they worked side by side making bombs for the war effort. They were married on January 9, 1943, but their time together was cut short when Robert was drafted into the Army and sent overseas just nine days after their wedding. Following the war, Marian and Robert briefly lived in Kershaw, SC before settling in Winnsboro, SC.
Marian dedicated her career to the Fairfield County School System, working as a teacher's aid at Everett, Mt. Zion, and Gordon schools until her retirement. She was a life-long member of St. Theresa Catholic Church in Winnsboro.
Marian is survived by her son, Jimmy and wife Pam of Winnsboro; daughter Linda and husband Tom Fikas of Irmo, and daughter-in-law Jo Faile of Columbia. She was a loving grandmother to three grandchildren: Ali Faile and wife Emily of Mt. Pleasant, Janis Hoffman of Charleston, and Michael Fikas of Arizona. Marian was also blessed with four great-grandchildren: Delaney Faile, Berkley Faile, Mason Hoffman, and Kayden Hoffman. She is also survived by her siblings, Jean Marie Murphy and Thomas Murphy of Pennsylvania and Joseph Murphy of Virginia. She was also survived by loving inlaws Sally Faile, S.W. Faile, and Margaret Faile Johnson as well and many nieces and nephews.
Marian was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 63 years, Robert A. Faile, Sr., and her son Robert A. Faile, Jr.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 7, 2023, at St Theresa Catholic Church in Winnsboro, SC.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Marian's memory be made to St. Theresa Catholic Church, P.O. Box 1004, Winnsboro, SC 29180.
