L. Virgil Porter died on Sunday, June 27, 2021. He was born in Columbia, SC and grew up in Winnsboro, SC. He was the son of he late Lacy M. and Ruby Smith Porter.
He attended Greenbrier High School where he was a member of the Beta Club. He was a University of South Carolina graduate with a BS degree in Business Administration. While a USC, he served as a page in the S.C. House of Representatives.
After finishing USC in 1963, he worked in Columbia with the State’s Technical and Comprehensive Education Program during the development of technical colleges and special training programs. He also worked with the State Development Board, under two governors, where he recruited and located industrial plants around the state to include such companies as Olin Chemical, Amoco Chemical, Chrysler Air-Temp, Dayco Rubber, American Koyo and many others.
After leaving the Development Board, he became involved with Central Adjustment Bureau as a regional manager, and he won every award offered by the company. He was inducted into the company’s Hall of Fame for income and profit on two different occasions. Porter retired from the financial arena at age 62.
Mr. Porter served as an officer in the S.C. National Guard. He was selected as a training officer in the Palmetto Military Academy, the State’s Officer Candidate School.
Mr. Porter was once active in Asbury Methodist Church in Columbia, S.C. having held several leadership positions. After returning to Winnsboro in 1996, Porter served a term on the Fairfield County School Board of Trustees and on the Planning and Zoning Commission. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Winnsboro.
Mr. Porter was laid to rest in a private family committal service in Winnsboro.
