Carroll Dale Holmes

Carroll Dale Holmes, 78, of Winnsboro passed away on Monday, October 17, 2022.  Born in Columbia, he was the son of the late Clement Dale Holmes and Frances Carroll Wylie (William H.) 

A lifelong resident of Fairfield County, Dale was a well-known businessman who owned and operated Holmes Realty and Insurance on Congress Street in Winnsboro for many years. He was very active in the Winnsboro community, serving in different leadership capacities. He served as the chairman for the Fairfield chapter of the United Way and was a longtime active Rotarian. He also served on the board of Wachovia Bank.

Dale loved the outdoors where he enjoyed most of his hobbies. He also was a history buff, and it was well known that he spent time combing property all over the county for arrowheads and other artifacts to add to his collection. He had a very extensive collection that he loved to show his grandchildren. He was an avid golfer and for a time served as President of the Fairfield Country Club. He was an avid pilot and enjoyed flying his Cessna 172 to many different places. He took his friends and family on trips from the mountains to Florida and the Bahamas. He was an avid offshore sport fisherman. He always enjoyed sharing his catch with friends at the river. He was well known for his fish fries at his home on Lake Wateree.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 57 years, Joyce Mayes Holmes; sons, Paul C. Holmes (Erin) of Chapin; Bryan D. Holmes (Michelle) of Winnsboro; six grandchildren, Stephen Holmes (Mary Beth), Rebecca Holmes, Andrew Holmes (Tori), Matthew Holmes, William Holmes, and Thomas Holmes; and three great grandchildren, Harper, Hayden, and Daisy Jane. 

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, October 21, 2022, at Stephen Greene Baptist Church conducted by Reverend Ethan Brown.  The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the fellowship hall.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent in Dale’s memory to St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or Fairfield County Animal Shelter, PO Box 60, Winnsboro, SC 29180.
