Grace Gibson Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Grace Irene (Gordon) Gibson announces her passing on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at the age of 80, following a brief illness.  Grace was born in Ludowici Georgia, on October 16, 1938, the 2nd of 7 children to Tracy Allen and Ruby Doris (Mobley) Gordon.  Having grown up on a farm, she graduated from Ludowici High School and then Savannah Business College.  Later, she was a Bookkeeper/Secretary at the I. C. Helmy Furniture Company in Savannah, Georgia.

In May of 1959, Grace married John Cornwell Gibson, resided in Savannah, Georgia, later in Cleveland, Tennessee and finally settling in Charlotte, North Carolina. They had 3 children, John David, Barbara Emily and Grace Margaret.

In 1978 Grace graduated Cum Laude from UNCC School of Nursing.  She was a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society.  She worked 31 years as a RN for Charlotte Memorial Hospital, first as an Assistant Head Nurse and then as a Case Worker for AIDS patients through the Mecklenburg County Health Department. She was devoted to her clients and felt that helping people afflicted with AIDS was one of her callings in life.

Grace was a woman of many talents including cooking, baking, sewing, crocheting, knitting, quilting, painting, working with stained glass, gardening, and basket weaving.  She was an avid reader, having a house full of books, and also loved plants and birds. Her greatest love, after God, was her family.  She greatly loved spending time with her grandchildren, being involved in their activities which included sports, going to movies, swim meets, shopping, ROTC, band, and visiting museums with heritage activities.

Grace is survived by, John, her husband of 59+ years, her children David (Susan) of Harrisburg, NC, Barbara (Willis) of Waxhaw, NC, and Maggie (Robert) of Lincolnton, NC, her grandchildren Nikolaos, Emily, Daniel, Sarah, Savannah and Hunter, siblings Gaylon, Patsy (Mike), Dale, and Peggy (John), along with many nieces and nephews.  She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A graveside service to honor Grace will be held at 2 O'Clock PM Saturday, December 29th, at the Bethel ARP Cemetery located on North Vanderhorst Street in Winnsboro, SC with Rev. Dr. Dennis Bean officiating.
